Dermatophyte Infections
Dermatophytes are fungi that invade keratin-containing tissues including skin, hair, and nails. Athlete's foot represents the most common dermatophyte infection, manifesting as itching, redness, and scaling between toes or on soles.
Ringworm, despite its name, involves a fungus rather than parasites. It appears as circular, red, scaly patches with central clearing. The condition is contagious through direct contact or contaminated surfaces.
Jock itch affects warm, moist groin areas. Symptoms include redness, itching, and burning sensation. Men experience higher prevalence, particularly those who perspire heavily or wear tight clothing.
Candida Infections
Candida species inhabit normal skin and mucous membranes. Proliferation occurs when local conditions favor growth or immunity becomes compromised. Oral thrush appears as white patches on tongue and mouth tissues.
Yeast infections affect warm, moist areas including skin folds, genitals, and under breasts. Excessive moisture, antibiotics, and weakened immunity predispose to infection. Symptoms include redness, itching, and characteristic white discharge.
Nail Infections
Onychomycosis affects nails, causing discoloration, thickening, and crumbling. Toenails more commonly affected than fingernails. Infection progresses slowly over months to years, gradually destroying nail structure.
Distinguishing fungal nail infections from other conditions requires laboratory confirmation. Nails thickened from psoriasis or trauma mimic fungal infections, potentially leading to unnecessary treatment.
Systemic Fungal Infections
While less common, systemic fungal infections occur in immunocompromised individuals. Aspergillosis affects lungs of those with weakened immunity. Cryptococcal meningitis represents serious CNS infection in AIDS patients.
Severe immunosuppression predisposes to unusual fungal infections rarely seen in healthy individuals. Recognition becomes critical for appropriate treatment initiation.
Prevention and Risk Factors
Warm, moist environments promote fungal growth. Proper drying after bathing and wearing breathable clothing reduces infection risk. Nail trauma and poor nail care increase onychomycosis susceptibility.
